About Us

Direct Biologicals is a United States company that designs custom enzyme and microorganism products for livestock and agriculture. Founded in 2009, the company principals have over 17 years of product formulation, fermentation and field research experience. Direct Biologicals has successfully connected large scale fermentation companies and end users, reducing costs in the process.

In addition, the company develops new and unique strains of microorganisms enabling the improvement of existing microorganism and enzyme technologies. Direct Biologicals continues moving forward with modern technological advances and applications, providing customers with innovative solutions and comprehensive product lines.

Biofertilizers

Soils are natural living environments which contain extraordinary amounts of organisms that coexist in a complex environment. Due to increasingly intensive agricultural practices, soils can suffer from loss of nutrients, compaction and chemical residues. When soils are not healthy, crop production is compromised.

As these agricultural practices continue into the 21st Century, it will become more and more important to not only replenish soil health, but to engage technologies that release nutrients chemically bound in the soil. Fortunately, as technology has evolved internationally and universities became more open to biological vs. chemical treatments, strains of microbes have been proven to be effective as inoculants to seeds, soil, or plant surfaces.

Direct Biologicals has several proprietary non-GMO microorganism technologies that are unique to the agricultural industry. Formulas have been specifically designed for improving soil compaction and decomposing organic matter. In addition, strains are available that solubilize phosphorus in calcareous, or high pH soil, releasing previously bound phosphate for plant growth. The company also offers nitrogen fixation inoculants for all crops.

Feed Additives

In the quest to make animal production more efficient, Direct Fed Microbials (DFM) and enzyme technologies have been researched by many organizations over the past two decades. These products are fed for different reasons in the livestock industry from increased production to environmental quality. Markets in the United States and internationally are projected to continue to grow at a rapid rate as feed costs continue to rise and producers look for ways to extract energy more efficiently.

A top priority at Direct Biologicals is to provide customers with technologies that have not only been well defined in the industry, but with cutting edge products, as well. Direct Biologicals provides proven DFM and enzyme products at lower costs and new fibrolytic enzyme technologies to combat the difficulty of extracting energy from DDGS as they become available. With intricate knowledge of how the industry works, the company provides customers with direct access to the large fermenters in the United States, Europe and Asia. The end result: top products at reduced costs.

Each manure treatment and storage structure is a unique, but categorized entity that most likely has been dealt with by the principals involved in this company. At Direct Biologicals, we confidently say that we have "seen it all." We have observed in the field what works and doesn't work in certain situations and our product line has been designed to address many of the challenges in each sector of today's livestock industry. The products Direct Biologicals offers today are the result of 17 years of field work in the manure management industry working with producers on a daily basis to find the best possible solutions.

Photosynthetic Bacteria

Photosynthetic or phototrophic bacteria (PTB) are some of the most widely distributed microorganisms in the environment, playing an important role in the food chain among all animals and plants. This genera of microbes receives solar energy with bacteriochlorophyll, which produce purple carotenoid pigments. Phototrophic bacteria, symbiotic nitrogen fixing organisms, also provide nutrients for animals and plants. They are capable of assimilating both carbon dioxide and molecular nitrogen, using light as an energy source. Photosynthetic bacteria are rich in amino acids, nucleic acids, hormones, coenzymes and vitamins that are produced within the cell.

Phototrophic bacteria are used widely in Asia for various biotechnological applications. PTB are currently being used for water purification, bioremediation of chemicals, bio-fertilizers, wastewater purifiers, animal feed and aquaculture supplements, biological hydrogen production and coenzyme Q production, etc. In addition, they are now being investigated in the solar industry for their uniquely efficient light harvesting complexes.

Direct Biologicals has a full line of phototrophic bacteria that range from single strains to complex hydrogen sulfide-oxidizing biosystems. As a result of extensive research, the company has successfully developed phototrophic communities that are effective for purifying the environment and generating nitrogen and carbon recycling.

Applications include:

  • Fruits and vegetables (improves yield, color, nutritional quality and storage time)
  • Plant and livestock pathogen protection
  • Livestock lagoons and wastewater purification
  • Bio-fertilizer
  • Compost activator
  • Pond, aquaculture and lake water purification
  • Yard and turf

Manure Treatment

One of the issues associated with concentrating very large numbers of animals at farm sites is greater concentration of manures. These facilities, which include confined feeding operations and feedlots, have become a common and specialized part of the livestock production process. Over the past 18 years, manure and waste-handling and disposal problems from intensive animal production have received attention as facilities have increased in size and the effects of these perceived challenges reached beyond the industry to affect others.

A number of forces are at work in this segment of agriculture. These include changes in the livestock industries themselves -- specifically the concentration of animals in larger facilities, because of cost and production quality advantages. The presence of these types of facilities has led, in some cases, to conflicts between farm operators and their neighbors over such issues as corporate farming, odors, and air and water quality.

Direct Biologicals has evolved with the livestock industry and fundamentally understands the different facets of issues that challenge producers on a daily basis. From solids management to odor control, there truly is no one "silver bullet" that is the solution to every problem in the industry. Depending on the sector, manures may be handled as dry litter, concentrated in pits, or in lagoons and other outdoor storage structures for subsequent land application.
